An introductory carpentry course developing the skills needed to perform layout, measurement, cutting, and fastening operations. These core competencies will be developed through individual projects. Emphasis will be placed on the safe and proper use of hand and power tools, proper layout, accuracy, and developing a sense of craftsmanship.

Goal Statement

The goal of this course is to introduce the student to the tools and procedures used to fabricate millwork and cabinetry in the construction industry.

  1. Wood as a building material
    • Describe the properties of wood and wood products used in the construction industry
    • Explain the impact of wood properties
  2. Measurement, layout, and accuracy
    • Define the imperial measurement system
    • Explain different procedures used for material layout
    • Demonstrate accuracy related to individual projects
  3. Proper use of hand and power tools
    • Demonstrate the proper use of hand tools
    • Demonstrate the proper use of power tools
  4. Project design and material estimating
    • Design individual projects
    • Document project design ideas
    • Estimate required material needed to complete individual projects
  5. Hand and power tool skill development
    • Develop proficiency using hand tools to complete individual projects
    • Demonstrate proficiency using power tools to accurately process materials
  6. Finish carpentry techniques
    • Analyze required fabrication techniques used in project assembly
    • Demonstrate proficiency in multiple joining techniques

Interview Details

The student interview must provide evidence that illustrates competency in all course learning objectives. Interview will be given in the department by department faculty. Faculty will interview applicants and assess against an evaluation rubric. Evaluation rubric and student checklist located in department office. Applicant may bring supporting evidence (pictures, letters, etc.) to the interview to support their request for credit.
