Introduces students to the information necessary to be competent in the activities common across all facilities within the supply chain including safety, quality control, communications, teamwork, good workplace conduct, familiarity with the key computer systems that underpin supply chain operations, product receiving, product storage, order processing, packing and shipment, inventory control, safe handling of hazardous materials, evaluation of transportation modes, customs, and dispatch and tracking operations. Prepares students to successfully pass the Certified Logistics Associate assessment and the Certified Logistics Technician assessment that would allow Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) and a Certified Logistics Technician (CLT) recognition by the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC). MSSC is a 501(c)3 non-profit, national, industry-led, training, assessment and certification organization.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement
  • To help students and trainees develop the knowledge necessary to become a front line worker and beyond in the field of supply chain logistics.
  • To help students prepare for Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) and Certified Logistics Technician(CLT) national certifications, recognized by the Manufactures Skill Standards Council (MSSC).
  • To addresses work activities and related skills involved with moving material though out the supply chain: to and from production sites, warehouses, distribution centers and within the various transportation modes (truck, air, rail, water and pipeline).

  1. Global Supply Chain Logistics
    • Describe principal elements of the global supply chain logistics life cycle, the roles and responsibilities of the front-line worker, and the five modes of transportation.
  2. The Logistics Environment
    • Identify and list the major security requirements, the improved international logistics security, and how logistics activities impact the environment.
  3. Material Handling Equipment
    • List and describe examples of manually operated equipment, lift trucks, and loading docks.
    • Describe the functions and types of conveyors, and automated systems.
  4. Safety Principles
    • Identify the principle federal safety organizations and their functional requirements.
    • Explain the characteristics of a safe, clean, and orderly work environment.
    • List emergency safety procedures, safety markings, and types of fire extinguishers.
  5. Safety Material Handling & Equipment Operation
    • List and identify the basic safety handling practices, functionality and use of personal protective equipment, and equipment safety features.*
  6. Quality Control Principles
    • Identify and characterize key quality control systems, and provide examples of how front-line workers support these systems. *
    • Explain quality audits, and present quality improvement recommendations to supervisors.
  7. Work Communication
    • Explain methods of effective communication between shifts, with both internal and external customers, and through speaking, writing, reading and listening skills.

    • Describe a high-performance team and an effective team leader.
    • Explain ways to set team goals and how to resolve conflict.
    • Describe typical requirements for good workplace conduct.
  9. Using Computers
    • Identify commonly used computer systems and software applications that capture logistical information.
    • Explain the uses of software systems by front-line workers.
  10. Product Receiving
    • Describe activities essential to receiving, unloading, and checking.
    • List and describe standard documents for receipt of material.
    • Describe the procedures for identifying and reporting overages, shortages, or damages.
  11. Product Storage
    • List key issues affecting how materials are stored, types of storage, and other methods of storage and retrieval.*
  12. Order Processing
    • Describe order cycle and procurement processes.
    • Explain pick ticket inspection, how audits are conductive, the staging of material, and steps involved in developing a packing manifest.
  13. Packaging and Shipment
    • Identify the process for selecting appropriate packing material and packaging tools best suited for handling and packaging products.
    • Describe the process to ensure that outbound counts are accurate and steps to verify that the right package is securely loaded into the right trail.
  14. Inventory Control
    • Describe fundamentals of inventory control.
    • List and explain the most common inventory control systems and methods for accurate inventory counting.
    • Describe methods for capturing logistics information.
  15. Safe Handling of Hazardous Materials
    • List government regulations related to hazardous material.
    • Identify safe working practices for unloading and loading hazardous material.*
    • List other safe work practices for transfer and storage of hazardous material.
  16. Evaluation of Transportation Modes
    • Describe each mode of transportation (Truck, Air, Rail, Water, Pipeline) and its advantages and disadvantages.
    • List the main considerations in determining the best mode of transportation and examples of transportation documentation.
  17. Dispatch and Tracking Operations
    • Explain shipping documentation.
    • Describe the main factors related to vehicle routing, tracking cargo, and basic customs terminology.
  18. Measurement Conversion*
    • Calculate basic weight and volume.*
    • Convert U.S. measurements to metric and metric to U.S. measurements.*

Licensure/Certification Details

Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) and Certified Logistics Technician (CLT) by the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) must be current. Department faculty will verify certifications. Verified CLA and CLT certifications, and the CLA and CLT CPCLL application, will be copied, signed, dated, and retained in the School Office.
