Catalog Course Description

This is an advanced-level course continuing the study of residential construction.  It focuses on residential carpentry construction techniques in the areas of roofing, siding, brick veneer, window and door installation, insulation, interior wall and ceiling finishing, finish flooring and wood trim.  Lab work includes completion of a wood frame house in a controlled environment.

  1. Discuss the materials used in residential construction and how they apply to stages of finish work.
  2. *Establish a proficiency in working from sketches.
  3. *Establish a proficiency in working from construction documents.
  4. Demonstrate the safe use of power tools.
  5. List the basic steps for installing asphalt shingles and wood shingle roof coverings.
  6. Read a window schedule and a manufacturer’s size table.
  7. Install a standard double-hung window.
  8. Install an exterior and interior pre-hung door.
  9. Install plain-bevel wood siding.
  10. Install wood shingle siding.
  11. Install brick veneer or stone veneer.
  12. Install gypsum board to ceiling and wall surfaces.
  13. Secure wood flooring to a plywood subfloor.
  14. Install a ceramic tile floor system.
  15. Identify different types of molding and trim.
  16. Install standard molding at floors, walls, ceilings, windows, and doors.
