Catalog Course Description

Offers an in-depth study of designing for print using InDesign.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

To give students a working knowledge of desiging printed materials using InDesign, this includes multi-page documents.

Core Course Topics
  1. Printing terminology.
  2. InDesign's layout, panels (including layers), and graphic tools.
  3. How to set type and understand typographic choices for legibility and communicating a message. Basic typographic rules relating to type including hierarchy and proper paragraph setting. Tables.
  4. Discuss book layout including spreads and grid, proper file set-up with bleeds, and margins.
  5. Designing and constructing multiple page documents using a grid, layers, local, and master pages.
  6. Developing time saving applications using type, paragraph, and objects styles.
  7. Pantone, spot color, and four color printing. Placing images and converting to CMYK for output.
  8. Digital output and PDF formats.
  9. File formats and working with tangent software to develop graphic elements and insert images.
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
 
Upon completion of this course students should be able to:
  1. Use pen and shape tools in the tool palette to create graphic elements.*
  2. Understand basic print terminology.
  3. Construct typographic solutions including typeface selection as well as use typesetting tools such as kerning, tabs, indents, letter, and line spacing.*
  4. Design and create forms using tabs and tables.
  5. Design and produce documents with spot color, pantone color, and CMYK process color.
  6. Create and use Style Sheets to control type in a document.*
  7. Use Master Pages in a multiple page document.*
  8. Demonstrate the ability to work with layers.
  9. Assess document for errors including spelling, and run prepress check before outputing as a final version.
  10. Save documents correctly for print.

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  • Tests (written and computer skills tests).
  • Projects.
  • Produce a final project incorporating all major course objectives.
