Catalog Course Description

User Experience (UX) Design is the application of theory and understanding of human needs in the creation of interactive products. Students will implement the first three stages of Design Thinking: Empathize, Define, and Ideate, to create research and design artifacts as part of a user experience interactive product design process.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

To provide students with the ability to evaluate and apply design thinking process and systems to user experience design.

Core Course Topics
  1. Introduction to User Experience Design (UX) and the Role of UX Designer. This includes User Research methods, key factors of UX, and desired UX designer skills.
    • Explain User Experience Design in using appropriate terminology and theories.
  2. UX Deliverables–including but not limited to Research: personas, story boards, journey map; Ideation: brainstorming, user flow; Prototyping: sitemaps, low-fidelity prototype, high-fidelity prototype, interactive prototypes: Evaluation: usability report.
    • Apply the theories of user experience design to the process of designing interactive experiences.
  3. Theories of UX Design including Human Centered Design (HCD) and Design Thinking as well as the role of empathy in creating successful user experiences.
    • Understand and choose design solutions that empathize with the users response type and emotion.
  4. Product Experience including user experiences based on response type (Visceral, Behavioral and reflective) and emotion.
    • Analyze user needs to define the problem.
  5. Design Thinking – Empathize and Define the Problem. This includes research, agile process and tools used for defining the problem including yet not limited to User Interviews, Personas and Journey Maps.
    • Complete a variety of research tools including but not limited to personas, interviews, journey maps to investigate solutions.
  6. Design Thinking – Ideate and Prototype. Includes the heuristics of design, accessibility, low-fidelity prototyping as a way to rapidly solve design problems.
    • Students will apply the heuristics of design to create a low fidelity prototype
