Catalog Course Description

An intermediate college level exploration Life Drawing through direct observation of a model. This class meets for six (6) hours a week.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Gesture

    Illustrate the figure in full with quick linear analysis based on energy, movement and rhythm.

  2. Line quality

    Demonstrate techniques of line variation as it pertains to contour, movement, and indications of form and weight

  3. Measuring

    Apply correct proportions in a drawing by using measurement and sighting methods, including positive/negative space analysis

  4. Composition

    Apply measuring and design elements to utilize the ratio of paper size to figure to create harmony between the figure, ground and the predetermined size of the drawing.

  5. Value

    Create a body of work that emphasizes understanding of aspects of lighting and shadow on the figure and visually communicates the illusion of 3D form through tonal gradations in charcoal.

  6. Foreshortening

    Demonstrate competence in measuring and accurately drawing the figure foreshortened, reclining, and turned.

  7. Anatomy

    Illustrate the skeleton in full and demonstrate a working knowledge of skeletal proportions, bones and joints.

  8. Portraiture

    Illustrate an understanding of the skull, neck, facial planes and features.

  9. Vocabulary

    Define and utilize vocabulary that relates to college drawing classes and basic anatomy

  10. Visual Overview

    Discuss various artists’ figurative work. Interpret technique and narrative in figure based compositions.

  1. A pre-instruction drawing will be done on the first full day of class to compare with work done at the end of the semester.
