An intermediate level college painting class that further explores traditional and contemporary approaches to observational painting. This class meets for six (6) hours a week.
Goals, Topics, and Objectives
Students in this course will develop an awareness of the advanced concepts, methods, and materials involved in oil painting. Exercises are designed to build upon skills developed in Painting 1 while sharpening these skills through advanced challenges. Emphasis will be placed upon understanding the painting process as a concept of dynamic color/shape relationships.

Demonstrate the ability to maintain an organized palette with all related materials for oil painting.

Demonstrate expertise in describing forms using monochrome value as the principle means of development.
- Individualize Palettes
Exhibit an advanced knowledge of how to create a still life image restricted to warm/cool colors.
- Traditional Techniques
Demonstrate familiarity with grisaille, glazing, scumbling, and feathering approaches beyond material learned in Painting I
- Contemporary Techniques
Demonstrate familiarity with alla prima, impasto, open edge effects, and color blocks interaction beyond material learned in Painting I
- Canvas stretching
Demonstrated the ability to stretch and prepare canvas on standard stretcher bars.
- Copy Masterwork
Demonstrate expertise in copying a masterpiece painting focusing on color, composition, proportion, and the use of abstract color shapes and patterns.
- Self-portrait
Create a self-portrait with advanced knowledge of composition, color, and proportion.
