Introduces the theory and application of motion graphics. Includes pre-visualization techniques, animatics, and video to communicate a message. Utilizes AfterEffects and/or other creative software to explore animating graphics. This class meets for six (6) hours a week.
Goals, Topics, and Objectives
- Introduction to motion graphics, designers, and styles.
- Evaluate various styles of motion graphics and styles.
- Terminology for motion.
- Apply terminology to project discussions.
- Pre-visualization: pencil storyboard to frame development.
- Construct storyboards in the context of design methodology.
- Creating artwork for motion media.
- Assess the proper artwork creation method for defined motion projects.
- Create vector and raster illustrations for motion media.
- Color theory related to screen design.
- Decide appropriate color schemes for topic relevance and computer display.
- Typography for screen concepts.
- Construct typography for static and kinetic motion.
- Introduction to Adobe AfterEffects.
- Use basic AfterEffects tools effectively.
- Produce and save motion videos using AfterEffects.
- Describe the use of tools and menus in the AfterEffects workspace.
- Saving conventions for animation and the rendering of videos.
- Demonstrate the appropriate method for saving animations and the rendering of videos.
Assessment and Requirements
- Assigned projects including, but not limited to: animations, videos, and artwork.

Outcomes
Credit for Prior College-Level Learning
Provide, in writing, a request to the department. Indicate the rationale for requesting credit and describing the type of college-level learning or course descriptions. Portfolio must contain 3-5 pieces of evidence that illustrates competency in all course learning objectives. Department faculty will evaluate submitted portfolios based on the evaluation rubric. Evaluation rubric and student checklist located in Division Office. Interview with appropriate departmental faculty to discuss the request and work samples.
