Emphasizes how to refine darkroom techniques and the aesthetics of the photographic experience.

Designed to further extend the student’s photoskills.

Core Course Topics
  1. Use of adjustable film-based camera.
  2. Assignments based on controlled lighting.
  3. Assignments designed for the student to organize and produce large bodies of work.
  4. Hands-on processing of black and white film.
  5. Hands-on processing of black and white prints in the darkroom.
  6. Design and aesthetic considerations appropriate to making/understanding photographic works.
  7. Group critiquing of the produced photoworks.
  8. Presentation of large bodies of work.
  9. Research skills - how to use the library, Internet and gallery/museum field trips.

  • Use an adjustable still-film-based camera effectively.
  • Perform film processing techniques successfully.
  • Produce high-quality black & white prints.
  • Expand/refine skills in pictorial composition.
  • Present a series of photoworks effectively.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Photographic projects

Produce a series of 20 sequenced photoworks.

  • Emphasis of this series should be on the photographic aspect.
  • Method of presentation should control the sequencing aspect (ex.: book format).

Produce a series of 20 photographs using controlled lighting.

  • Continuous artificial light (tungsten) is employed.
  • Discontinuous artificial light (strobe) is also used.
  • Subject variation encouraged.

Produce a series of 20 photographs of choice.

  • Student required to present written statement of theme before starting work.
  • Emphasis on photographic aspect of work.
  • Appropriate presentation of work (ex. matted prints)
