Catalog Course Description

This course is designed to help the individual navigate the business of design. Explores the fundamentals of design management, creative problem-solving techniques, and interpersonal skills for a beginning design entrepreneur who is building a client base.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Business Model- Not just freelancing, building a business.

    • Create a personal brand identity and professional direction.

  2. Networking–projecting a professional image.

    • Explore networking avenues and create content for both in real life and online networking.
    • Evaluate social media platforms for best practice scenarios.

  3. Assessing the business needs of a client.

    • Analyze and evaluate the communication needs of clients and creating or responding to design brief.
    • Implement brainstorming techniques.

  4. Creating a preliminary design pitch.

    • Develop and deliver a winning presentation for design projects using appropriate digital tools.

  5. Team work and communicating effectively for building business relationships.

    • Write effective communications for business.
    • Understand non-verbal communications.

  6. Contracts and Project Pricing Strategies

    • Estimate time, expenses and project scope to develop profit strategy.
    • Differentiate between various pricing strategies and develop appropriate tactics to receive fair compensation.
    • Evaluate business documents including estimates, invoices and contracts.
    • Learn how to protect the business from common pitfalls that plague individual business owners.

Departmental Exam Details

Portfolio Review Details Provide, in writing, a request to the department. Indicate the rationale for requesting credit and describing the type of college-level learning or course descriptions. Portfolio must contain 3-5 pieces of evidence that illustrates competency in all course learning objectives. Department faculty will evaluate submitted portfolios based on the evaluation rubric. Evaluation rubric and student checklist located in The School of Liberal Arts office. Interview with appropriate departmental faculty to discuss the request and work samples.
