Catalog Course Description

Offers an overseas experience to explore first hand major historical and art works in architecture, sculpture, painting, and other forms of visual arts. Also focuses on original archeological sites complemented by visits to museums, universities, and other cultural sites. Course requires travel to foreign country/countries. Prior to leaving for destination, students must meet in class on campus to receive intensive instruction on the materials of the visit. Specific travel information will be announced at least one semester prior to leaving for the country/countries.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. History & Culture
    • Describe and illustrate the history and culture of the country studied abroad.
    • Identify, through observations and records, the specific impact of economic, political, religious and cultural conditions of the country upon art objects.
  2. Historic Art Themes and Motifs
    • Recognize historic art themes and motifs of historical periods relevant to locations abroad.
    • Describe and differentiate monuments and historic art through identification of themes, motifs, conceptual elements and/or architectural patterns in the locations abroad.
  3. Cultural Awareness
    • Describe the social and cultural patterns of the country/countries, including economic, political, religious, and family patterns, as they relate to the historical periods being studied.*
  4. Study of Specific Monuments
    • Utilize terminology to describe technical details of specific art and historical monuments and relate them to the cultural and historical periods of the country being studied.*
    • Identify significant art, architecture, and monuments of the country being studied.
  5. Architectural Study
    • Utilize the specific art historical terminology and technical details of major historical buildings and architecture, and relate them to the cultural and historical periods being studied.*
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  1. Identify and study major architectural monuments and works of art in the destination country.
  2. Discuss the foundation of art and culture and the formation of the distinct characteristics of art and architecture in that country.*
  3. Explain the chronology of different periods in art in relation to parallel cultures.*
  4. Discuss the relationship between rituals and certain forms of art and architectural design in the traditional culture in the destination country.*
  5. Define major vocabulary terms in the field of art in the destination country.*
General Information

A detailed course syllabus for each section of ART-290 will be presented to the College Council by the Humanities & Social Science Division prior to the travel. Specific travel information, including fees, will be announced at least one semester prior to leaving for the country/countries.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Prior to departure, assigned readings and discussion in class. Upon returning, students will write a research paper incorporating course objectives.
