Reviews braking systems, including introduction to anti-lock braking systems (ABS), as well as diagnosis and troubleshooting experiences. Recommend prerequisite of AUTO 160.

Core Course Topics
  1. Disc/drum brake mechanical components.
  2. Disc/drum brake hydraulic components.
  3. Measuring brake system failure tolerances.
  4. Basic disc/drum brake service.
  5. Machining brake drums and rotors.
  6. Parking brake operation, diagnosis and service.
  7. Anti-lock brake system operation, diagnosis and service.
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  • Analyze brake fluids and bleed brake systems.
  • Measure brake drums, rotors and brake pads.
  • Identify failure symptoms in brake calipers and wheel cylinders.
  • Correct brake noises.
  • Analyze vehicle drivability issues relating to brake systems.
  • Obtain vehicle brake fault codes from computer.

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Measurable objectives will be evaluated by the instructor based on accuracy and proficiency and completion of assigned tasks. Homework, class participation, lab activities, quizzes and tests will be used as criteria to assign the student’s final earned grade for this class.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

Students must take notes on demonstrations, carefully read and analyze assigned course materials and perform exercises to determine their competence in servicing modern hydraulic disc/drum brake systems.
