Covers two-stroke and four-stroke cycle engines. Examines maintenance issues, diagnosing, testing, and repair of a small engine's ignition, fuel, governor, and mechanical systems.

  2. Engine construction.
  3. Cooling and lubricating systems.
  4. Ignition systems.
  5. Fuel systems.
  6. General safety around small engines.
  7. Hand tools and measuring instruments.
  8. Fasteners, sealants, and gaskets.
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  1. Perform an Ignition system tune-up.
  2. Perform a fuel system tune-up.
  3. Perform diagnostic tests to determine mechanical condition.
  4. Disassemble a small engine.
  5. Clean and inspect parts.
  6. Re-assembly and adjust mechanical components.
  7. Diagnose cause of no-start condition.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Attendance, quizzes and written final exam. Measurable objectives will be assessed by the instructor based on the accuracy and proficiency of objective completion. Students must take notes on demonstrations, read carefully and analyze course materials, and follow all safety considerations when performing exercises.
