Catalog Course Description

This course focuses on building enclosure and performance with reference to finish systems, geographic location, cost, and proper installation techniques. Topics include reading and evaluating blueprints, and working with traditional hand and power tools. Lab activities examine residential and commercial enclosure systems, including insulation, interior and exterior finishes, weather barriers, doors, windows and flashing. Emphasis will be placed on building performance and sustainability.

The goal of this course is to properly identify, select, install and analyze various building systems to maximize building performance.

  1. Doors
    • Identify residential and commercial door assemblies and installation techniques
    • Install residential doors
  2. Windows
    • Identify residential and commercial window assemblies and installation techniques
    • Install residential windows
  3. Cornice Details
    • Identify, design, and detail residential cornice sections
    • Construct a residential cornice
  4. Roof Systems
    • Identify residential and commercial roof types, styles, and systems
    • Construct a residential roof system
  5. Exterior Finish Systems
    • Identify commercial and residential exterior finish materials. Including but not limited to roofing materials, siding, and trim
    • Design and construct an exterior finish system for a residence
  6. Insulation systems and sustainability
    • Identify commercial and residential materials and methods for acoustic and thermal building insulation
    • Design and construct an insulated structural assembly
    • Evaluate an insulated building assembly for energy efficiency and performance
  7. Interior Finish Systems
    • Identify interior finish materials, systems, and installation methods. Including but not limited to; drywall, paneling, finish flooring, tile, and ceilings
