Catalog Course Description

Covers the estimation of residential and commercial construction costs using the quantity survey method. Discusses the importance of using construction documents for accurate construction cost estimating related to material and labor. Course utilizes spreadsheet applications for preparing cost estimating forms for material, labor, and other costs.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

The goal of this course is for students to identify and understand the residential and commercial project areas that must be estimated and use tools and methodologies best suited to quantify the materials, labor methods, and scheduling required for project delivery.

Core Course Topics
  1. Methods for Estimating
    • Navigate and interpret basic architectural working drawings
    • Demonstrate basic calculations, including area and volume
    • Identify and understand basic types of estimates and their appropriate applications
    • Record a database of information on labor and material costs
    • Explain the application of mathematics and geometry in cost estimating
  2. Professional roles in the construction process

Identify and distinguish the roles and responsibilities of the various participants in the design and construction process

  3. Site development and coordination

Identify and quantify the materials, methods, labor, and associated cost required for site design, development, and construction

  4. Foundations and Substructure

Identify and quantify the materials, methods, labor, and associated cost required to design and construct various residential and commercial foundation systems

  5. Superstructure

Identify and quantify the materials, methods, labor, and associated cost required to design and construct various residential and commercial structural and framing systems

  6. Exterior Finishes

Identify and quantify the materials, methods, labor, and associated cost required to design and construct various residential and commercial exterior finish systems, including; masonry, siding, roofing, trim, paint

  7. Interior Finishes

Identify and quantify the materials, methods, labor, and associated cost required to design and construct various residential and commercial interior finish systems, including; drywall, paneling, flooring, ceiling finishes, paint and trim

  8. Insulation and Mechanical Systems

Identify and quantify the materials, methods, labor, and associated cost required to design and construct various residential and commercial insulation systems, heating and cooling systems, plumbing and electrical systems
