Catalog Course Description

Students will explore the materials and methods used in the development of both civil and commercial construction projects. Students will analyze existing civil and commercial projects with a focus on the development of project specific details centered on material use, performance, and adherence to industry specific design guidelines. Projects will include: bridges, roadways, commercial site development, and civil construction details.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Materials and methods used to assemble components of commercial and civil construction projects.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of multiple materials, based on their physical properties, and performance under different environmental and structural conditions.
  2. Performance properties of materials within a structural assembly
    • Demonstrate an understanding of how different materials perform in a structural assembly. For example, reinforcing steel in foundations and structural concrete, expansion joints in roadways
  3. Projects specifications, standards, and details
    • Using local design standards for roadways, bridges, and other civil construction projects, create project specific details for commercial and civil projects that include: bridges, parking lots, storm drainage systems, roadway design, and utility layout and design.
  4. Construction detailing
    • Analyze existing construction projects and documents to develop construction details that adhere to industry standard principles of design and construction.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of traditional detailing techniques, including the use of lineweights, textures, and notation.
  5. Construction Documentation
    • Develop a set of construction documents and details that demonstrate an understanding of the use of multiple materials in a structural assembly.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of proper material size, location and relationship in a structural assembly.
  6. Construction standards and codes
    • Demonstrate the ability to use local codes and building standards as a reference to develop commercial and civil design details.
