Catalog Course Description

Explores how to develop a commercial building for an assigned building site and use. Simulates “real-world” experiences in the transition from design to construction documents. Includes site planning, design development and a partial set of construction documents with plans, elevations, sections and details. Revit software is utilized for document production.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

The goal of this course is to develop an understanding of commercial design and construction from basic site layout to detailed construction document drawings.

Core Course Topics
  1. Pre-Design Processes
    • Discuss the beginning processes for a commercial project including obtaining an architectural survey and appropriate soil exploration and testing.
    • Given a project site location and survey, develop an analysis of the site including information regarding zoning, soils, weather, solar positioning, topography, various sensory impressions, existing vegetation, circulation, adjacencies that may impact the design process.
  2. Site Design
    • Develop a site plan and supporting documentation and views suitable for actual submittal to the city based on posted submittal requirements.
    • Present, orally and visually, the site and project proposal as if given to the city planning commission.
  3. Building Schematic Design Development
    • Develop a schematic design development package, including; floor plans, elavations, and building sections.
  4. Building Design Development
    • Develop a design development package of information including; exterior and interior material selections, wall types, floor(s), ceiling(s) and roof assemblies, glass and glazing assemblies, doors and windows, various MEP fixtures, a structural framing plan and a typical exterior wall section.
  5. Commercial Detailing
    • Translate design sketches into usable commercial construction details.
