Catalog Course Description

An introduction course on kilowatt-hour meters and meter operations. Several devices, procedures, and metering concepts are presented including basic electrical theory and electrical circuit meter diagrams associated with testing and connection devices. Students will become familiar with automatic compensations and adjustments built into watt-hour meters to maintain meter accuracy. Various instrument transformer applications are discussed. Students will be able to identify and demonstrate personal and electrical safety procedures for testing and diagnostics at various metering installations.

Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  1. Identify the various types of watthour meters used in an electric field installation and their purpose in delivering quality electric service.*
  2. Identify the various types of instrument transformers and their function in providing proper current and voltage in an electric field metering system.*
  3. Draw an electrical diagram, identifying how connections are made from meter to testing equipment, including metering components.*
  4. Identify and define three different types of single and poly-phase metering configurations utilized.
  5. Define the function of compensation and adjustments built into watthour metering systems.
  6. Identify the steps of troubleshooting a meter and methods for identifying single, three-phase, poly-phase, and self-contained meter installations.
  7. Define how a meter is protected against tampering and weather/animal/insect conditions.*
  8. Define the application of current transformer class ratings, turns and current ratios and polarity testing methods.*
  9. Identify and define the testing and calibration techniques of the various types of single-phase transformer-rated meters and the equipment used to conduct these tests.*
  10. Identify safe isolation/protective procedures for inspection and testing of metering equipment, and demonstrate how a meter can be isolated utilizing appropriate tools/equipment.*
