Catalog Course Description

Examines the design principles of heating, cooling, and hydronic systems. Topics include both residential and commercial heat loss and gain, equipment selection, duct design, piping design, and air terminal selection.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Heat loss and heat gain calculations.
    • Calculate heat loss/heat gain for residential buildings HVAC systems.
  2. Selection of heating and cooling equipment.
    • Compare and select the appropriate heating and cooling equipment for a specified need.
  3. Duct design layouts meeting industry duct design standards
    • Demonstrate lay out an effective duct design that will meet all current design standards and codes.
  4. Construction documents
    • Develop a set of industry specific construction documents describing the environmental control systems
    • Demonstrate the ability to properly locate heating and cooling equipment on property according to mechanical codes and ordinances
  5. Air balancing methods.
    • Calculate the flow rate for a building, individual rooms and the main trunk lines for supply and return ducts, branch lines and terminals
  6. Selecting grilles. registers and diffusers
    • Distinguish between and select registers, grilles, and diffusers by their cfm, spread, and throw requirement.
