Investigates the characteristics, properties, and uses of materials, components and construction methods as specified by interior designers. Emphasizes performance, use, maintenance, and sustainability of materials and finishes. Also explores quantity calculations, installation methods, workroom practices, and resource development.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

To familiarize students with a broad range of products, materials, and construction methods used in the creation of interior environments. Guest speakers will provide detailed product knowledge, and serve as a resource for student contact database. Field trips and Internet research will assist in the selection of appropriate materials. Calculation, quantification, and installation of materials will be explored. Students will learn the consequences of unit packaging and the potential for product waste.

Core Course Topics
  1. Characteristics and properties of residential and commercial interior materials and components.
  2. Properties, characteristics and appropriate use of materials, finishes and furnishings.
  3. Identify, classify, and analyze interior materials and products to determine if they meet user needs.
  4. Carpet layout, yardage calculations, and installation methods.
  5. Calculate wallcovering quantity requirements taking into account wall dimensions, pattern repeat, unit packaging, and product waste.
  6. Guest speakers representing diverse interior product manufacturers will supplement textbook readings and lectures providing technical information.
  7. Sustainable materials, environmentally responsible design and the LEED rating system.
  8. Analyze and assess the appropriateness of the finishes and materials specified for flooring, walls, cabinetry, countertops, ceilings, doors, millwork and textiles.

  1. Identify appropriate interior materials and finishes based upon user need, cost, product durability, maintenance and environmental impact.
  2. Describe the properties and characteristics of materials and furnishings including textiles, wallcoverings, flooring materials, millwork, cabinetry, and other interior materials.
  3. Recognize appropriate materials and product that meet user needs for a specific interior installation.
  4. Analyze interior spaces to determine carpet layouts for appropriate seaming.
  5. Calculate and specify various products and materials in residential and commercial settings.
  6. Calculate and specify product and material quantities as they relate to unit packaging.
  7. Produce and maintain a contact/resource file for present and future product information and assistance.
  8. Identify sustainable products, materials, furniture, fixtures and finishes. and exhibit a basic working knowledge of the LEED process and credits related to interiors.
  9. Recognize and critique existing residential and commercial interior surfaces for durability, functionality, wear, need for repair or replacement and sustainability properties.
