Catalog Course Description

Introduces various elements of basic PLCs including the identification of programmable logic control systems as well as overview of PLC system architectures. Provides instruction in basic numbering systems, computer terminology, PLC functions, program structures, and point addressing basics.

Goal Statement

To provide students the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Introduction to PLCs, utilizing digital learning materials and hands-on labs.

  1. PLC Hardware Overview
  2. Basic Numbering Systems and Computer Terminology
  3. Basic PLC Functions, Instructions, Program Structures and Language Standards
  4. Relationships between the "and", "or" , and "not" functions to their PLC equivalents
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. List the functionality of the components of a typical PLC system. 2. Convert values from the decimal based system into, binary, octal, hexadecimal and ASCII. 3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of PLC functions and program structure through designing, entering, editing, and running a ladder logic program.* 4. Match the PLC logic rungs to the the "and", "or" ,"and not" functions when given typical PLC logic .
