Catalog Course Description

Provides the basics of ballroom in the American and International styles in a group setting. Students will be able to recognize and execute basics of American Smooth and International Standard styles of Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Rumba and East Coast Swing. Technique, rhythms and leading and following are studied and practiced.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement
To help students learn the basic patterns of Cha Cha, Rumba and East Coast Swing;Latin dances and Waltz and Foxtrot Ballroom dances, individually and with a partner.
Core Course Topics
  1. Basics of American and International Styles of Selected Dances
    • Execute basic patterns of Cha Cha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Waltz and Foxtrot in American and International Styles.
  2. Rhythm
    • Execute movement accurately with music rhythmic patterns.
  3. Alignment, Technique and Dance Position
    • Analyze the difference between each Ballroom and Latin dance position, alignment and technique.*
  4. Leading and Following
    • Demonstrate alignment of the body and find the center of gravity individually and with a partner in each dance style.
    • Demonstrate receiving and giving weight with a partner.
    • Execute mirroring as a pair and individually.
  5. Space
    • Execute each dance style in the appropriate spatial patterns and throughout the general dance space.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. Movement Exam: demonstrate given basics of all styles.
  2. Movement Exam: demonstrate movement connection of each dance style with the music rhythmic patterns. Written Exam: demonstrate knowledge of music, rhythm, terms and structure.
  3. Movement Exam: execute all dances with correct technique, alignment, placement and dance position.
  4. Movement Exam: execute with a partner smooth leading and following with accurate musicality.
  5. Written and Movement Exam: demonstrate knowledge of floor patterns and use of general space.
