Catalog Course Description

Continues dances learned in DNCA 131 with more complex patterns. Basics of three Latin dances, Mambo, Bolero and Jive, and two Ballroom dances, Tango and Viennese Waltz, are added. Technique, rhythm, leading and following are studied and practiced.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Basics of American and International Styles of Selected Dances
    • Execute basic patterns of Latin dances, Mambo, Bolero and Jive and Ballroom dances, Tango and Viennese Waltz in both American and International Styles.
  2. Dances learned in DNCA-131, Cha Cha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Waltz and Foxtrot
    • Execute given complex patterns of Cha Cha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Waltz and Foxtrot with a partner.
  3. Rhythm
    • Execute movement from all selected dances with rhythmic accuracy and timing.
  4. Alignment, Technique and Dance Position
    • Analyze the difference between each dance position, alignment and technique in Mambo, Bolero, Jive, Tango and Viennese Waltz individually and with a partner.*
  5. Leading and Following
    • Align the body and center of gravity individually and with a partner in each dance style selected.
    • Connect with a partner through weight sharing.
    • Execute mirroring as a pair and individually.
  6. Space
    • Execute each selected dance with appropriate spatial patterns and throughout the general dance space or line of dance.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. Movement exam: Execute basics of Mambo, Bolero, Jive, Tango and Viennese as a soloist and with a partner.
  2. Movement exam: Execute given complex patterns of Cha Cha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Waltz and Foxtrot with a partner.
  3. Movement exam: Execute given phrases from selected dances with rhythmic accuracy and timing.
  4. Movement, oral and/or written exam: Explain the difference between each dance position, body alignment and technique of Mambo, Bolero, Jive, Tango and Viennese Waltz individually and with a partner.
  5. Movement and oral exam: Execute and explain the aspects of alignment, center of gravity, weight sharing and mirroring in leading and following with a partner.
  6. Movement exam: Execute each selected dance with appropriate and accurate spatial patterns in the general dance space and in the line of dance.
