Catalog Course Description

Continues the study and practice of dances learned in DNC 132 with more complex patterns with a partner. Basics of Latin dances, Paso Doble and Samba; and a Ballroom dance, Quickstep, are added. Rhythm, technique, and leading and following are studied and practiced.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Basics of American and International Styles of Selected Dances
    • Execute basic patterns of Latin dances, Paso Doble and Samba; and Ballroom dance, Quickstep in both American and International Styles.
  2. Dances learned in DNCA 132
    • Execute patterns beyond the basics of dances from DNCA-132, Mambo, Bolero, Jive, Tango and Viennese Waltz.
  3. Rhythm
    • Execute movement from all selected dances with rhythmic accuracy and timing.
  4. Alignment, Technique and Dance Position
    • Analyze the difference between each dance position, alignment and technique in Paso Doble, Samba and Quickstep with a partner.*
  5. Leading and Following
    • Align the body and center of gravity individually and with a partner in each dance style selected.
    • Connect with a partner through weight sharing.
    • Execute mirroring as a pair and individually.
  6. Space
    • Execute each selected dance with appropriate spatial patterns and throughout the general space or line of dance.
  7. Competition
    • Explain levels and criteria in Latin and Ballroom competition in both American and International Styles.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. Movement exam: Execute basics of Paso Doble, Samba and Quickstep.
  2. Movement exam: Execute given complex patterns of Mambo, Bolero, Jive, Tango and Viennese Waltz.
  3. Movement exam: Execute given phrases from selected dances with rhythmic accuracy and timing.
  4. Movement, oral and/or written exam: Explain the difference between each dance position, body alignment and technique of Paso Doble, Samba and Quickstep.
  5. Movement and oral exam: Execute and explain the aspects of alignment , center of gravity, weight sharing and mirroring in leading and following with a partner.
  6. Movement exam: Execute each selected dance with appropriate and accurate spatial patterns in the general dance space and/or in the line of dance.
  7. Class assignment, movement and written exams: Explain levels and criteria in Latin and Ballroom competition in both American and International Styles with given selected dances.
