Catalog Course Description

Continues the study of ballet via an expanded and more challenging movement vocabulary. More complex combinations at the barre, at the centre and through the dance space are explored. Skill is also acquired through the understanding of skeletal-muscular anatomy and function involved in dance. Care of the body and conditioning for dance is emphasized.

Goal Statement

To develop skill with more complex combinations of Ballet movement beyond the beginning level and to condition a body that is capable of more advanced level work.

Core Course Topics
  1. Vocabulary
    • Identify intermediate Ballet vocabulary in French and in English from a given demonstration.
  2. Technique and purpose
    • Execute movement terms with correct technique and explain their purpose.
  3. Combinations and phrases
    • Execute movement combinations and phrases at the barre and at the centre.
  4. Turns
    • Demonstrate skill/technique with selected turns.
  5. Ballet Artists
    • Discuss a major artist/contributor to Ballet choreography or dancing.
  6. Skeletal-muscular structures and functions
    • Label and apply skeletal-muscular anatomy, function, and conditioning to dance.
  7. Body conditioning
    • Self evaluate fitness and body condition as it applies to dance skill.*
  8. Musicality
    • Execute accurate musicality with all basic movement vocabulary, combinations and phrases.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. Written Exam: movement identification in French and English translation from a given demonstration.
  2. Written Exam:state and explain movement vocabulary purposes. Movement Exam: execute technique from given movement vocabulary.
  3. Movement Exam: demonstrate skill/technique with given combinations and phrases.
  4. Movement Exam: demonstrate skill/technique in turning.
  5. Choreographer/Dancer Presentation: oral, written, video class presentation of an artist.
  6. Written Exam: Identify skeletal and muscular structures and explain their function as they apply to dance movement.
  7. Fitness Testing: pre and post testing for muscular endurance, strength, balance and flexibility.
  8. Written Exam: define musical terms. Movement exam: Execute selected movement with correct musicality/rhythm/timing.
