Catalog Course Description

Further explores Modern Dance as an art form that offers a limitless way to express oneself in human movement. Primary emphasis is on building beyond basic Modern movement vocabulary to more complex phrases in the center and through the dance space.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

To be able to correctly identify and execute Modern Dance vocabulary beyond the basics with correct technique and skill and to demonstrate skill in movement phrases.

Core Course Topics
  1. Movement Vocabulary
    • Identify intermediate Modern Dance vocabulary.
  2. Technique
    • Execute movement combinations and phrases at the intermediate level with correct technique.
  3. Modern Dance Pioneers and Current Choreographers
    • Explain the contributions and philosophy of a Modern Dance pioneer or current artist.
  4. Skeletal-muscular Structures and Functions
    • Label and apply skeletal-muscular anatomy and functions as they apply to dance.
  5. Body Conditioning
    • Describe fitness components of muscular endurance, strength, flexibility and balance as they apply to dance skill.
  6. Improvisation and Choreography
    • Compose movement phrases through improvisation and movement manipulation as a soloist, with a partner or in a small group.*
  7. Musicality
    • Create and perform movement phrases with accurate rhythmic patterns.*

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. Written exam: identify movement from a demonstration.
  2. Movement exam: execute all given movement with correct technique.
  3. Classroom presentation: oral, written and video presentation from a selected Modern Dance artist.
  4. Written exam: identify skeletal-muscular structures and explain their functions and application to Dance.
  5. Written exam: define and explain some components of physical fitness. Fitness testing: pre and post testing for endurance, strength, balance and flexibility to evaluate improvement.
  6. Class Assignment/s: compose movement studies by employing improvisation and movement manipulation.
  7. Movement exam: execute movement with accurate musicality.
