Explores advanced modern dance. Primary emphasis is on performing advanced movement phrases and on developing choreographic skill and stage presence.

Goal Statement

To be able to correctly identify and execute advanced Modern Dance movement vocabulary with correct technique and skill; develop choreographic skill; and improve stage presence and performance

  1. Identify a comprehensive Modern dance movement vocabulary from a demonstration.
  2. Execute advanced Modern dance movement phrases in various styles with skill.
  3. Execute movement with rhythmical accuracy and connection with the music.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to transcend technique and translate a choreographer's intent into performance.
  5. Identify and state the approaches to movement of both Modern dance pioneers and current choreographers.
  6. Demonstrate the fundamentals of choreography and improvise given a starting point. 

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. Written exam: identify movement vocabulary from a demonstration.
  2. Movement exam: through performance, demonstrate phrases in various styles.
  3. Movement exam: demonstrate ability to connect with music, rhythmically and stylistically.
  4. Movement self evaluation with instructor peer panel: demonstrate ability to translate particular styles and movement.
  5. Oral written assignment: research paper, oral presentation with video clips of given Modern dance pioneers and current contributors.
  6. Assignments: dance studies given to use choreographic tools of the craft.
