Catalog Course Description

Introduces low-beginning-level college communication skills and interactions for non-native English speakers. Satisfactory completion qualifies students for ELI-102C. This course does not transfer nor count toward degree graduation requirements.

ELI-101C is designed to help English Language Learners (ELL) acquire low-beginning-level college communication skills and strategies.

Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  1. Practice American college classroom norms such as taking turns, agreeing/disagreeing, asking questions, and participating in groups
  2. Analyze speaker attitude
  3. Use collocations to express ideas
  4. Practice note-taking skills using pictures, guided notes, and diagrams
  5. Understand and produce complete written and spoken sentences
  6. Practice conversations using scripts

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment of academic achievement will be identified and implemented by the class instructor. Methods will include, but not be limited to, assignments, presentations, individual and/or group projects, and quizzes/tests.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

In order to progress to the next level, students must:

  1. Actively participate in at least 80% of all class sessions
  2. Average 75% or higher on all assignments, presentations, projects, and quizzes/tests
  3. Make a final presentation (worth 25% of the final class grade)
