Catalog Course Description

Provides a structured clinical experience in the hospital and in the prehospital emergency medical service environment. Focuses on providing an opportunity to demonstrate learned assessment skills in real-life situations under appropriate supervision.
NOTE: Successful completion of this course is required for individuals to be eligible to take the National Registry Certifying Exam for EMT-Basics; this exam is not included in this course. (Due to the nature of this course, all students must have completed the Health Careers medical packet, criminal background clearance, and provide proof of health insurance prior to attending clinical. Students must also provide proof of a current Healthcare Provider CPR card from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross prior to attending clinical rotations.)

  1. Construct well-written run reports based on the completed patient encounters.
  2. Perform multiple Vitals Assessments.
  3. Demonstrate proper body mechanics when lifting and moving patients.
  4. Demonstrate safe clinical decisions.
  5. Demonstrate a clear and concise verbal radio report.
  6. Demonstrate multiple Initial Patient Survey/Assessments.
  7. Demonstrate multiple Secondary Patient Survey/Assessments.
  8. Create a proper “field impression” for all basic level patients encountered.
  9. Perform proper BLS airway management.
  10. Assist EMS crews and hospital staff members at the skill level appropriate to classroom training at the time of the clinical experience.

Note that this course is required to meet all objectives as outlined in National EMS Education Standards which is made available to all students.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

This curriculum is primarily evaluated on the mastery of skills. Students may demonstrate competency in less than the recommended hours or may need additional clinical/field experiences.  Initial course hours must be completed during the scheduled semester.

In addition to the skill mastery/assessments, all course participants must demonstrate professional attributes at all times or disciplinary actions will take place, which may include removal from the program.

All course participants must be able to physically complete tasks associated with the duties of an EMT. See the clinical handbook for specifics.

Due to the nature of this course, all students must have completed the Health Careers Medical packet, criminal background clearance, and proof of current health insurance prior to attending clinical.

Instructors (or their designees) reserve the right to require students to provide picture identification for test taking, graded papers or projects or other appropriate purposes.

Students must have proof of a current Healthcare Provider CPR card from American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Credit for EMS 100, EMS 107 and EMS 109 (Corequisites) can be granted upon the presentation of a CURRENT EMT-Basic license from the State of Michigan and a National Registry of EMT-B certification.
