ENG-095E is a co-requisite of ENG-131E as part of the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) and provides writing, reading, and study skills instructional support of the ENG-131 curriculum. Course work will help ELL students develop as college writers and readers through discussion, workshops, homework, and reading and writing assignments that complement ENG-131 work.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment of ENG-095E is not contingent upon assessment in the co-requisite ENG-131 class. ENG-095E replaces the ENG-092 and ENG-082 ELL courses to accelerate enrollment into college level coursework. Students must earn a grade of S (Satisfactory) in ENG-095E before advancing to their next college level writing class. Students who do not pass ENG-095E must take ENG-092 and, if necessary, ENG-082. Students may not repeat ENG-095E.

Assessment of academic achievement will be identified and implemented by the class instructor. Methods will include, but not be limited to, assignments, essays, quizzes, tests, and a departmental exit essay.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

While additional assignments are necessary and should be identified by individual instructors in their syllabi, the following are required in all sections of ENG-095E. All students must:

  1. Attend at least two individual conferences focusing on student reading and writing practices
  2. Brainstorm ideas for essay topics and essay development
  3. Rough draft workshop for ENG-131E essays
  4. Peer review rough drafts
  5. Group discuss reading assignments to evaluate comprehension
  6. Participate in grammar review and assessment (i.e. quizzes or short tests)
  7. Practice vocabulary enhancement strategies
  8. Demonstrate research and citation techniques (i.e. college databases, internet searches, in-text citation practice, Works Cited generators)
