Catalog Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the basic principles of engineering design, computer aided design (CAD) and additive manufacturing, with a focus on creating new designs to solve engineering problems using 3D printing technologies. Students will use industry standard 3D modeling software to create virtual prototypes of mechanical assemblies and gain hands-on experience with 3D printing through laboratory experiments and group design projects. Other topics include creating orthographic drawings, auxiliaries, sectioning, conventions, and dimensioning.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Introduction to design and 3D printing
    • Define standards and conventions as applied to technical drawings
    • Describe design processes related to problem solving in engineering
    • Identify the standard dimensioning and tolerancing practices for mechanical drawings
    • Describe additive manufacturing processes for building mechanical parts
  2. Create 3D objects
    • Create, edit and update sketches in different planes to create 3D objects
    • Create 3D objects in 3D solid modeling environment using methods such as extruding, splitting, etc.
    • Optimize virtual parts (weight, volume and surface finish optimization)
  3. Orthographic, section, and auxiliary views of a part
    • Create orthographic drawings from 3D models
      • Apply the concept of cutting plans to create section views and sectioned 3D CAD models
      • Apply section theory to computer models when designing
      • Create auxiliary drawings from 3D models
  4. 3D printing
    • Export 3D designed files from 3D modeling environment for 3D printing
    • Adjust the infill density and printing accuracy to minimize the filament cost
    • Know the major components in DIY (Do-It-Yourself) 3D printers and be able to calibrate and tune them
    • Operate open-source 3D printers
  5. Engineering design process
    • Identify a problem statement for their term project
    • Work in teams to design and 3D print a prototype to address a problem
    • Communicate the project outcomes effectively using visual and written means
