Offers students the opportunity to study a particular topic or issue in greater depth, working individually with an instructor of history. Examines the methodologies of the discipline, such as the use of primary sources or source criticism. The amount of work and expected outcomes reflect the number of credit hours. Requires that 6 hours of HIST course work have been completed before taking this class.
Goals, Topics, and Objectives
- Topics will vary according to the individual Directed Study.
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Identify, summarize, and analyze major elements of the particular topic.
2. Achieve proficiency in relevant historical topics.
3. When applicable to the specific independent study, the student should be able to:
a. Outline time and chronology.
b. Analyze change and continuity over time.
c. Compare and contrast parallelism in the impact of important events.
d. Explain cause and effect in history.
Assessment and Requirements
Assessment of academic achievement will be identified and implemented by the class instructor. Methods will include, but will not be limited to, individual projects, vocabulary, class participation (discussion and critiques), and tests.
Each instructor will select the teaching materials she/he feels are best suited to her/his course.
