Catalog Course Description

Focuses is on how to lead a healthy lifestyle throughout life. Provides assessment of current level of wellness and introduces topics of health such as nutrition, stress management, aging, exercise, and holistic health.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

To develop healthy lifestyle habits students will follow for the rest of their lives.

Core Course Topics
  1. A Introduction of Lifetime Wellness

    Differentiate between health and wellness. Recognize characteristics of a healthy person.

  2. Physical Fitness

    Recall how to train for improvement of strength, cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance and flexibility. Practice a pattern of regular exercise throughout the semester. Explain what is considered a good level of physical fitness.

  3. Drug and Alcohol Use

    Differentiate between drug use and misuse. Explain acceptable alcohol use. Recognize successful treatments for drug and alcohol abuse.

  4. Nutrition for Health

    Discuss the basis of a healthy diet.

  5. Preventing Violence and Abuse

    Recognize signs and symptoms of abuse. Recall places to seek help for victims of abuse.

  6. Principles of Weight Management

    Discuss how healthy fat loss, weight gain and weight maintenance is achieved.

  7. Preventing Chronic Disease

    Assess risks for developing disease (cancer, cardiovascular and diabetes) and recall ways to decrease the risks.

  8. Complementary Medicine

    Describe how best to use complementary medicine. Recognize common acceptable uses of complementary medicine.

  9. Stress Management

    Recognize stressors in life and learn various tools to help alleviate stress.

  10. Smoking Cessation

    Assess the dangers of smoking and how best to stop a smoking habit.

  11. Sexually Transmitted Diseases

    Explain what behaviors increase risk of sexually transmitted disease. Recognize common STDs. Recall ways to protect from STDs.

  12. Training to Become an Educated Consumer

    Recognize quackery and fraud in wellness and how and where to find legitimate answers to health questions.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
Assessment of academic achievement will be identified and implemented by the class instructor. Methods will include, but not be limited to, individual projects, vocabulary, class participation (discussion and critiques), class presentations, laboratory assignments, and tests.
