Catalog Course Description

Examines various tests used for evaluating the health-related and skill-related components of physical fitness. Includes tests for body composition, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, speed, agility, and power. Students will learn how to interpret test results and accurately recommend exercise programs for improvement.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

Students will learn to accurately measure the skill and health-related components of fitness using a variety of assessments. In addition, students will interpret test results and recommend exercise for improvement of the components of fitness.

Core Course Topics
  1. Introduction to Statistics

    Demonstrate calculation of basic statistical calculations (e.g. mean, median, and ranking).

  2. Health-related physical fitness

    Explain steps to follow when measuring the components of health-related physical fitness.
    Interpret results of various fitness tests.
    List exercises to improve components of health-related physical fitness.

  3. Skill-related physical fitness

    Explain steps to follow when measuring the components of skill-related physical fitness.
    Interpret results of various skill-related fitness tests.
    List exercises to improve components of skill-related physical fitness.

  4. Metabolic fitness

    Define metabolic fitness.
    Justify lifestyle changes based on metabolic fitness results.
    Demonstrate successful blood pressure measurement.
    Calculate waist/hip girth measurements.

  5. Preparation for change

    List tools available to access readiness for change in lifestyle (e.g. smoking cessations, beginning an exercise program, weight loss).
    Describe tools for motivating clients.

Assessment of academic achievement may include, but not be limited to case studies, quizzes, lab reports, group projects, individual projects, discussions, essays, and exams.
