Catalog Course Description

Teaches the exercise professional how to establish a comprehensive strength training programs for a variety of populations. Lessons focus on technique, physiology of muscle contraction, nutritional factors and performance, bioenergetics, program design, and periodization. The course will help to prepare the student for the National Strength and Conditioning Associations' Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification exam.

Goal Statement

Teaches advanced principles of strength training to prepare the student to work with athletes and clients with special needs.

Core Course Topics
  1. Biomechanics of Resistance Exercise

    Demonstrate the proper technique for a variety of upper and lower body exercises.

  2. Bioenergetics of Aerobic and Anaerobic Exercise

    Identify aerobic and anaerobic contributions to exercise.

  3. Adaptations to Resistance Training Programs

    Explain the neural, muscular, connective tissue, and endocrine responses to an acute and chronic strength-training program.

  4. Nutritional Strategies for Maximizing Performance

    Outline recommendations for pre-competition, during-event, and post-competition meals and snacks.

  5. Program Design for Resistance Training

    Illustrate principles of resistance training prescription including 1) goals, 2) exercise selection, 3) training frequency, 4) exercise order, 5) resistance and repetitions, 6) volume, and 7) rest periods.

  6. Program Design for Speed, Agility, and Power Training

    Describe techniques to develop speed, agility, and power.

  7. Program Design for Special Populations

    Plan a resistance-training program for a variety of populations including children, elderly, and female.

Assessment of academic achievement may include, but not be limited to case studies, quizzes, projects, group assignments, demonstrations, discussions, and exams.
