Introduces beginning and intermediate training techniques in strength and cardiovascular conditioning including evaluation of all components of physical fitness. Emphasizes flexibility, strength, cardiovascular conditioning, muscular endurance, and body composition. Course also includes information on nutrition and exercise as it relates to weight management and disease prevention, and discusses common risk factors.

Goal Statement
HPEA 117 is a sequential course designed to teach beginner and intermediate conditioning skills. The goal is to provide the knowledge and skills to live a healthy life.
Core Course Topics
- Introduction to equipment, safety and training guidelines.
- Proper mechanics for exercise, injury prevention, and benefits.
- Components of fitness including flexibility, strength, cardiovascular and muscular endurance, body composition, and how to achieve higher fitness levels.
- Assessment of fitness components and evaluation.
- Other forms of resistive training equipment, including exercise balls, tubing, body weight and core exercises.
- Exercises to develop the upper and lower body, abdominal muscles, and exercises to develop speed and power.
- Nutrition, diet, and exercise as it relates to weight control.
- Risk factors that cause diseases and preventive behavior.
- Disease prevention, including cardiovascular training to prevent cardiovascular disease; strength training to prevent osteoporosis; weight control to prevent diabetes (Type 2); and other related problems.
