Explains how to improve overall body awareness and fitness while presenting specific techniques to manage stress through the practice of relaxation, meditation, and asanas (postures). Covers how to find stillness; to practice deep breathing and postures; to improve mind-body awareness and self confidence; and to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

To help students learn and use the skills of Yoga to improve overall physical fitness, health, mental discipline, and self awareness.

Core Course Topics
  1. Breath and postures.
    • Identify the postures and explain their benefits with breath control.
  2. Skeletal-muscular anatomy.
    • Identify basic skeletal-muscular anatomy and explain their functions as they apply to Yoga.
  3. Stress management.
    • Analyze current health and make positive changes for overall body care, control and awareness to manage stress.
  4. Nutrition
    • Analyze current diet and make positive changes for a healthy diet.
  5. Disease, and injury prevention and care.
    • Analyze current health and fitness and make positive changes and choices for disease and injury prevention.
  6. Yoga philosophies.
    • Apply basic Yoga philosophies including non-judgmental attitudes toward self and others and non-reactivity.

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment of academic achievement will be identified and implemented by the class instructor. Methods will include, but not be limited to, individual projects, vocabulary, class participation (discussion and critiques), and tests.
