Catalog Course Description

Internship for students hired to fulfill the responsibilities of the Creative and Online Editor of The Mirror News. The Creative and Online Editor is primarily responsible for the collecting, selection, formatting, editing and design of creative section of The Mirror News as well as responsible for managing online content on The Mirror News website. The internship is under the direction of an instructor in the respective discipline. The Internship will provide opportunities for students interested in publishing creative writing to obtain experience beyond that generally available in the classroom. Class may be repeated for credit.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

Students will demonstrate the ability to do the following:

  • Serve as managing editor for The Looking Glass art and creative writing section of the Mirror News
  • Design the The Looking Glass creative section of The Mirror News.
  • Manage the content for The Mirror News website.
  • Collect, evaluate, select, and edit creative content for publication.
Core Course Topics
  1. The student and instructor will meet to create a set of objectives to produce each issue of the college’s student newspaper.
    • Identify, analyze, and evaluate different forms of creative writing, art, and illustration.
    • Identify, analyze, and evaluate creative elements in writing poetry.
    • Identify, analyze, and evaluate creative elements in writing fiction.
    • Identify, analyze, and evaluate creative elements in art and illustration.
    • Write a poem or creative fiction and submit to a creative writing competition such as Henry Ford College's Barrett Writing Competition.
    • Create an illustration or artistic work.
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)

Upon successful completion of the course, students will demonstrate the following:

  • Actively collect a variety of creative submissions
  • Evaluate, select, and edit creative submissions for publication
  • Design of the Looking Glass creative arts section of The Mirror News
  • Work with Editor-in-Chief on deciding the content for the Mirror News online edition.
  • Create original content for the online edition of The Mirror News
  • Collect and select submissions for publication specific to the online edition of The Mirror News.
  • Market the creative section and online edition of The Mirror News.
  • Assist with distribution of The Mirror News.
  • Set and meet production deadlines.
General Information

Note that a grade of C- is not transferrable and is not accepted by some programs at HFC

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  • Verbal and written assignments evaluating creative writing, art, and illustration.
  • Weekly consultations with the instructor focused on using publication standards for collecting, evaluating, selecting, and editing creative submissions to the Mirror News.
  • Bi-weekly publications of The Mirror News.
  • Online content on The Mirror News website.
  • Creative writing or artistic submission to a contest or publication other than The Mirror News.
General Course Requirements and Recommendations
  • Must have completed a college-level English course, preferably creative writing and/or a literature course with a grade of "B" or better.
  • Must have cumulative 2.5 GPA and successfully complete at least six credit hours at the end of each semester.
  • Recommended to have completed a college-level journalism class, such as JOUR 131.
  • Recommended to have prior experience with creative writing.
  • Recommended to have completed a college-level graphic design and/or web design course, or demonstrate proficiency in graphic design and/or web design.
  • Recommended to have prior newspaper experience, preferably being a staff member of a high school or college newspaper.
