Catalog Course Description

Module 12 of a 12-module sequence. Presents content at a pace that is appropriate for the individual with the assistance of computers. Covers an introduction to nonreal numbers, solving quadratic equations using a variety of methods, and graphing quadratic functions. Also includes problem solving techniques and applications. Requires a scientific calculator, access to an online homework management system, and the associated textbook.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement
  1. To develop in students a deeper and broader understanding of algebraic concepts, principles, and methods than what is achieved in MATH 0891, 0892, 0893, and 0894.
  2. To develop in students intermediate algebraic skills necessary for success in subsequent mathematics courses and other courses requiring mathematical skills.
  3. To develop in students the problem-solving skills needed to interpret, analyze, and solve applied problems requiring intermediate-level algebraic skills.
  4. To provide adequate in-class time for students to master basic skills.
  5. To develop study skills in students to become independent learners.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. A student is required to attain at least 75% on the module exit exam and 80% on all other assignments to complete the course successfully.
  2. The module exit exam grade will constitute at least 70% of a student's overall grade.
General Course Requirements and Recommendations
  1. Students are expected to have a scientific calculator, access to an online homework management system, and the associated notebook for the class.
  2. Attendance policy:
  • Attendance is required and will affect a student's grade both directly and indirectly. Students are expected to come to class on time and use the entire class time productively to be considered present.
  • Coming to class late can be disruptive and limits a student's own learning. A student may miss an important announcement or a homework-log check by arriving late. Please be on time. Instructors may consider coming late or leaving early as an absence.
  • Attendance is mandatory.
  • For every class missed after the first, a student's grade will be lowered one grade segment (for example from a B to a B- or from an A- to a B+).
  • Under extreme circumstances, an absence can be made up if another instructor is willing and able to accommodate the student in that instructor’s class to make up for the missed hours.
  • A student who completes the module successfully will earn at least a C.
