Catalog Course Description

Introduces computer applications unique to the medical office. Covers establishing information databases files, computerized appointment scheduling, patient account information, accounts receivable, aging accounts, insurance billing, recall notice, and production reports. Significant laboratory activities.

Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
**Cognitive Domain:** * Discuss the components, terminology, operation, and maintenance of the medical office computer system. * Discuss the application of computer concepts in a medical office practice. * Describe the critical elements in the selection of medical office computer system including both hardware and software. * Discuss ergonomics and the effects of body mechanics as it relates to computer use by medical assistants in the performance of their work duties. **Psychomotor Domain:** * Perform data entry utilizing knowledge of ergonomics to repetitive stress injury * Apply correct ergonomics including body mechanics as it relates to computer use. * Demonstrate basic software application including word processing, data base management, spreadsheets, and graphics. * Demonstrate the establishment of practice information files, patient entry, appointment scheduling, day sheet transactions, insurance information files, month and year-end report generation and systems utilities. * Perform medical office computer applications using the E-Thomas, Total Health Office Management Accounting System.* **Affective Domain:** * Demonstrate honesty and integrity in the performance of computerized billing. * Employ standards of patient confidentiality and security according to the requirements established in HIPAA. * Utilize ethical and legal standards in the performance of work-related function.
General Information

Medical Assistant students graduating from a program accredited through the Commission On Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) will demonstrate cognitive knowledge in subject matter required for competence in the profession.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. Emphasis will be on individual learning experience which will include active participation of students in classroom activities.  A cooperative rather than a competitive atmosphere will be encouraged.
  2. Students are expected to attend all the sessions of the class.  In case of absence, it is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor in regard to makeup.  Students are required to be present at the final examination.
  3.  If student does not officially drop, the grade earned will be awarded. 

The final course grade is calculated using a combination of learning activities, unit tests and the final exam.  The grading scale is:

  • 93% – 100%   A
  • 85% – 92%     B
  • 80%– 84%     C
  • 72% – 79%     D
  • 0%   - 71%     E

 The course grade is based on three components:

  • Learning activities                 1/3
  • Unit tests                              1/3
  • Final Examination                 1/3

 All scheduled semester tests must be completed before the final exam. The final exam is a comprehensive practical examination.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations
  • This course will consist of realistic simulations of computerized medical office activities.  The T.H.O.M.A.S. software program distributed through Genius Solutions will be used to process the information
  • Computer storage devices may not be used outside the computer lab.  Put storage device in pocket of folder along with completed hard copies and submit before leaving class.
  • Instructors (or their designees) reserve the right to require students to provide picture identification for test taking, graded papers or projects or other appropriate purposes.
