Catalog Course Description

First of four semesters of wind ensemble (symphony band) including preparation and performance of standard concert band music and transcriptions of all styles. This group performs for college as well as community functions. These courses are open to college students, adult members of the community, and advanced placement high school students. Woodwind, brass, and percussion instrumentalists should contact the director for auditions prior to the first rehearsal.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement
The purpose of the course shall be to allow college musicians to rehearse and perform together with challenging technical levels that will allow individual growth for each student. The final important purpose is to encourage student members to perform regularly on campus and in the community.
Core Course Topics
  1. Regular warm-up

    Practice warming up using breathing, range, balance, and blend exercises.

  2. Concentrated rehearsals

    Demonstrate introduction level of discriminating listening habits, with emphasis on introduction level of interpretation of symphonic band literature.

  3. Sight-Reading

    Demonstrate introduction level in sight-reading skills.

  4. Musical voice (personal tone)

    Demonstrate introduction level in the understanding of the dynamic contrast in development of one's musical "voice" or musical tone.

  5. Performances

    Perform at introduction level in end-of-semester performance as scheduled (HFC Symphony Band Concert, etc.).
