Catalog Course Description

Second of four semesters of jazz band, including preparation and performance of Big Band music in a variety of jazz styles from swing to contemporary. This group, which performs several concerts each semester, is open to college students and adult members of the community who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, or drums.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement
The purpose of the course shall be to allow musicians to rehearse and to perform a variety of big band compositions. In addition, students will develop an appreciation of jazz styles through performance and ensemble interpretation.
Core Course Topics
  1. Regular warm-up

    Perform an appropriate warmup on their instrument.

  2. Concentrated rehearsals

    Demonstrate introduction to reinforcement level of discriminating listening habits, with emphasis on introduction to reinforcement level of interpretation of jazz band literature.

  3. Sight-reading

    Demonstrate introduction to reinforcement level in sight-reading skills.

  4. Musical voice (personal tone)

    Demonstrate introduction to reinforcement level in the understanding of the dynamic contrast in development of one's musical "voice" or musical tone.

  5. Performance

    Perform at introduction to reinforcement level in end-of-semester concert (e. g. HFC Jazz Concert).
