Eligible to take ENG courses at HFC.
First of four sequential semesters of vocal jazz ensemble, covering preparation and performance of a variety of jazz and popular music in an ensemble of 8-20 voices. Group performs for various HFC and community functions. New singers may audition before or during the first week of class. No preparation is necessary, but the demonstration of the ability to sing in tune and hold a challenging part (soprano, alto, tenor, or bass) is required.
Goals, Topics, and Objectives
The purpose of this course is to challenge musicians to develop individual and ensemble performance skills in vocal jazz music. The student will take part in campus and community concerts.
- Vocal Warmup
Demonstrate a vocal warmup routine, including vocal jazz harmony and improvisation exercises, at an introduction level.
- Rehearsals
Perform their appropriate vocal part (soprano, alto, tenor, or bass), on representative vocal jazz literature, in sectional, full chorus, and mixed standing arrangement rehearsals, at an introduction level.
- Sight-reading
Demonstrate introduction level in sight-reading skills.
- Musical voice (personal tone)
Demonstrate introduction level in the understanding of the dynamic contrast in development of one's musical "voice" or musical tone.
- Performances
Perform in a variety of live music events, including informal jam sessions, on-campus programs, off-campus programs, and formal concerts, at an introduction level.
