Catalog Course Description

Arab Music Appreciation is a course designed to provide basic knowledge on Arab music while allowing the student to gain a deeper understanding of the variations of Arab culture through its music.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

The goal of this course is to provide liberal arts, technical students, and community residents an opportunity to gain basic and general knowledge of Arab & Middle Eastern Music so as to allow the student to comprehend and understand a performance of Arab music. General music listening, vocabulary, and instrumentation among other items will be introduced in the course.

  1. Historical Background of Arab Music

    Identify and describe the origins of Arab music.

  2. Historical figures in Arab music

    Identify significant historical figures in Arab music and differentiate between them and their styles.

  3. Arab Musical Instruments

    Visually identify various types of Arab musical instruments and distinguish between the sounds each makes.

  4. The Arab Music Ensemble

    Identify and distinguish between different types of Arab music ensembles and their performance practices.

  5. Arab Music Ethos

    Compare and contrast Arab and western music styles.

  6. Improvisation

    Analyze how improvisation is used in Arab music, including the concepts of Tarab.

  7. Arab Music Repertoire

    Identify and summarize representative Arab vocal and instrumental repertoire.

General Information

If all approvals are granted by the end of December, this class can be added to the schedule for the Winter 2020 term. Even with very short notice, it would be expected that the one section offered in the first term this class is offered would fill very quickly, because of the interest level in the Dearborn and HFC communities.
