Half-hour private lessons with a professional private teacher, intended to learn techniques for sound reinforcement and recording of live music performances. Students should contact the Applied Music Director prior to or during the first week of the semester for teacher assignment.
Goals, Topics, and Objectives
The goal of this course is to prepare students to be able to operate sound reinforcement for live HFC Music ensemble concerts and make audio recordings of HFC Music ensemble concerts. Students who are successful in this course will be able to apply the learned skills in a variety of professional opportunities.
- Sound System Equipment
Identify all the elements of a sound reinforcement system, including microphones, mixers, amplifiers, speakers, and a variety of cord types (including power, microphone, speaker, patch), and describe their proper functions.
- Sound System Setup
Arrange sound system equipment in a proper setup for the amplification needs of vocal and/or instrumental groups for rehearsals and live concerts.
- Sound System Operation
Operate a sound system to meet the performance needs of a vocal and/or instrumental groups for live concerts.
- Recording Equpment
Identify all the elements of an audio recording system, including microphones, mixers, recording software and device (e. g. Avid ProTools on a laptop computer), and a variety of cord types (including power, microphone, patch), and their proper functions.
- Recording System Setup
Arrange recording system equipment in a proper setup for the recording needs of vocal and/or instrumental groups for rehearsals and live concerts.
- Recording System Operation
Operate a recording system to meet the audio recording needs of a vocal and/or instrumental groups for live concerts.
- Recording Editing
Create a rough mix recording of live music concerts, using appropriate mixing software (e. g. Avid ProTools).
This course is to be "piggy-backed" with the other one-credit Applied Music courses, MUS 113, MUS 115, MUS 213, and MUS 215. No new hire needed, as the responsibilities for overseeing this would go to the Applied Music Director.
Assessment and Requirements
Private teacher evaluation of final reinforcement & recording project, e. g. operate sound reinforcement, operate audio recording and create a rough mix recording of a live music concert.
