Catalog Course Description

Fourth of four semesters of weekly one-hour private lessons intended to improve vocal or instrumental musicianship through study with a professional teacher. Students should contact the applied music director prior to or during the first week of the semester for teacher assignments. A juried performance is required at the conclusion of each semester. In addition to tuition, the student must also pay a weekly fee to the private instructor.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

The purpose of the course shall be to allow students to receive credit for private music lessons taken from approved music teachers. The student will develop individual performance skills.

Core Course Topics
  1. The private teacher is responsible for directing the study and performance skill development for each student.
  2. Appropriate scales, exercises, and techniques will be included as part of the study.
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  • Perform tonic & dominant seventh arpeggios in major and related minor (4-7 sharps/flats) on:
  • vocalists: voice & piano (one octave, single line)
  • percussionists: any keyboard instrument (one octave, single line)
  • pianists: piano (two octaves, both hands in octaves)
  • all other instrumentalists: own instrument (one octave)
  • Perform 8-12 minutes of material (e.g., sonata, concerto, art song, etude, etc.) representative of the students’ development
  • Demonstrate improved tone, technique, musicianship, and ease of confidence in solo performance before jury of music faculty.
  • Perform in public performance (e.g., HFCC Student Recital).
