Catalog Course Description

Third of four sequential semesters of vocal jazz ensemble, covering preparation and performance of a variety of jazz and popular music in an ensemble of 8-20 voices. Group performs for various HFC and community functions.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

The purpose of this course is to challenge musicians to develop individual and ensemble performance skills in vocal jazz music. The student will take part in campus and community concerts.

Core Course Topics
  1. Vocal Warmup

    Demonstrate a vocal warmup routine, including vocal jazz harmony and improvisation exercises, at a reinforcement to mastery level.

  2. Rehearsals

    Perform their appropriate vocal part (soprano, alto, tenor, or bass), on representative vocal jazz literature, in sectional, full chorus, and mixed standing arrangement rehearsals, at a reinforcement to mastery level.

  3. Sight-reading

    Demonstrate reinforcement to mastery level in sight-reading skills.

  4. Musical voice (personal tone)

    Demonstrate reinforcement to mastery level in the understanding of the dynamic contrast in development of one's musical "voice" or musical tone.

  5. Performances

    Perform in a variety of live music events, including informal jam sessions, on-campus programs, off-campus programs, and formal concerts, at a reinforcement to mastery level.
