Catalog Course Description

Emphasizes therapeutic communication and therapeutic use of self. Presents how to apply principles from stress, systems, learning, change, and caring theories to adult psychiatric patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Also explains legal and ethical standards for entry-level nurse practice.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

  1. Self-awareness and the communication process in psychiatric mental health.
  2. Psychiatric mental health nursing, the nursing process, and Orem's self-care deficit theory.
  3. Legal and ethical aspects of mental health nursing.
  4. Neuro-psychiatric medications.
  5. Critical thinking and decision making.
  6. Stress and the holistic approach to treatment.
  7. Nursing care of patients with major psychiatric diagnoses.
  8. Concepts of loss related to death and dying.
  9. Crisis and family violence.
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  1. Uses principles of therapeutic communication and caring behaviors when providing nursing care in the mental health setting.
  2. Explains principles of Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory, scientific principles and research findings as the foundation for critical thinking and decision making in the care of adult patients with alterations in mental health.*
  3. Identifies the ANA standards of professional nursing practice in health promotion, risk reduction, disease prevention, and illness management for adult mentally ill individuals.
  4. Describes the socio-economic and political forces that impact the delivery of mental health care.
  5. Applies ethical and legal principles to the decision-making process when caring for patients in the mental health setting.
  6. Demonstrates role development as an entry level nurse using feedback and self evaluation.
