Covers the methods and processes needed to develop a portfolio in order to request college credit for experiential or other college-level learning activities.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Portfolio Definition and Benefits
    • Identify the extent and definition of prior college level learning.
    • Clarify the importance and purpose of the portfolio.
  2. Life History
    • Describe why learning is a life-long process.
    • Identify how life history study can point out the value of prior or experiential adult learning which may translate into academic credit.*
  3. Chronological Record
    • Create a chronological worksheet or summary of the details of your training experience.
    • Collect supporting documentation for activities which were developed and implemented to improve or to gain a level of expertise.
  4. Major Goals
    • Identify how your learning became more purposeful through setting goals, analyzing patterns, and actively experimenting with and actual upgrading of your skills and knowledge.
    • Document and evaluate your life/career goals and objectives in light of the specific job or over all context for the level you have been seeking.*
  5. Core of the Portfolio
    • Differentiate between "book" learning and "practical" learning and the extent you can demonstrate that your prior college-level learning applies to your given field.*
    • Assess your own experience developed competencies as they relate to or match the authenticity of direct or indirect evidence toward your ultimate lifetime goals.*
  6. Assembling the Portfolio
    • Critique your writing for organization, clarity, completeness, and technical accuracy.*
    • Demonstrate college-level writing skills which will assist in obtaining college-level credit.
  7. Cover Letter
    • Summarize your experiences and projected knowledge and skills acquired through the portfolio process.
    • Create a positive short cover letter which Identifies your learning experiences, the environment in which they took place, including your role and your actions.
  8. Evaluation of the Portfolio
    • Identify HFC's expectations regarding the portfolio.
    • Complete your evaluation review for an acceptable portfolio to include written current skills and knowledge, the applicability of skills and knowledge to circumstances outside the specific job or context in which it was learned and learning that includes the major principles which apply to a given field.*

This course is identified as a departmental course for which a learner can receive college credit for prior college-level learning and/or skills acquired outside the traditional classroom. Terms of the HFCC Credit for Prior College-Level Learning Policy may be met by review of the appropriate documentation, skill, certifications, and/or knowledge acquired by the learner and submitted for evaluation by the appropriate departmental faculty. As required, one or more of the following may be considered in the evaluation process: A. field experience B. licenses held C. completing course exams and/or D. performance sequences and/or E. competing a portfolio. F. assessment of private trade school or other extensive college level industry training and learning by a departmental faculty member
