Catalog Course Description

Covers skills needed to function effectively as power or process plant engineers operating and maintaining primarily turbines, engines, power plant electrical, air compressors, industrial-commercial cooling systems, advanced control systems, and related equipment. Provides exposure to activities that duplicate skills in the workplace which meet the requirements of various national standards and license exams. May require plant visits as part of course work. Note: suggested co-requisite of MFMT 114 and/or MFMT 143.

Core Course Topics
  1. Basic plant cycles and thermodynamics review with definitions
  2. Basic steam engines, prime movers, and turbines
  3. Steam turbine principles, components, construction
  4. Turbine blading, design considerations, and control
  5. Turbine subsystems, accessories, and auxiliaries
  6. Turbine operation and maintenance procedures
  7. Internal combustion engines, gas turbines, combined cycle facilities
  8. Air compression and air compressors
  9. Power/building electrical distribution systems and their control
  10. Commercial/industrial air conditioning systems -- operation and maintenance

PLANT AUXILIARIES

  1. Supplies treated and conditioned feed water to boilers.
  2. Transfers liquids with pumps from and to various locations.
  3. Operates pollution control equipment to minimize emissions.*
  4. Supplies emergency power with auxiliary generating sets.

COMMISSIONING

  1. Performs acceptance inspections and installation tests.*
  2. Prepares new equipment for initial start up.*
  3. Conducts and coordinates start up, running, and testing.*

STEAM GENERATION, ELECTRICAL GENERATION/COGENERATION

  1. Starts, operates, and stops packaged firetube boilers.
  2. Starts, operates, and stops watertube waste heat boilers.*
  3. Starts, stops, and operates central station and process boilers.*
  4. Operates condensing & non-condensing steam and gas turbines.*
  5. Operates generators & cogenerators; synchronizes equipment.*

REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING

  1. Operates, maintains chillers (or heat exchangers).*
  2. Operates, maintains refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
  3. Operates, maintains air conditioning distribution equipment.
  4. Operates, services, maintains rooftop systems.

TESTING AND INSPECTION

  1. Performs chill water and cooling tower water tests.
  2. Inspects and tests safety valves on turbines, boilers, and engines.*
  3. Inspects and tests turbine, engine, and other prime movers.*
  4. Inspects and tests turbine condensers and air ejectors.*
  5. Inspects and test boiler controls for regulatory requirements.
  6. Complete heat balance analysis for power plants.*
  7. Inspects turbines, electrical controls, generators, engines.*

AUTOMATION, CONTROL AND INSTRUMENTATION

  1. Operates and maintains prime mover systems.*
  2. Inspects, tests, adjusts, repairs generating plant equipment.*
  3. Operates, monitors, adjusts computerized programs.
  4. Analyzes control system malfunctions to effect changes.*

MAINTENANCE

  1. Maintains and repairs water treatment systems.
  2. Maintains and repairs compressor systems and equipment.*
  3. Maintains prime mover electrical drives and speed controls.*
  4. Maintains turbines by cleaning, adjusting, inspecting, and repairing.*
  5. Maintains pumps by cleaning, adjusting, lubricating, and repairing.*
  6. Maintains piping systems by inspecting and repairing.
  7. Maintains plant or building chill water systems.
  8. Maintains plant or building air conditioning systems.
  9. Maintains plant electrical distribution systems.*
